Q. How is the online admission process different from the conventional one? What are the admission criteria? How will students be selected?

A. Our university moved to a complete online admission process even for offline courses many years ago. The admission process and forms are slightly different, but the process of admission is almost the same. Students who would want to take admission to the regular courses of the university also have the flexibility to visit the university, if they wish, but the process of submission of application is online only. But in general, at some places, particularly with a rural background, the students may face some problems. Technical knowledge is a little bit of an issue, they may face some difficulty, and internet connectivity is another issue.

Q. Will there be one intake or two?

A. Our University online courses have two batches – the January batch and the July batch.

Q. What will be the difference in cost between online and offline programmes?

A. The campus programmes (offline) have a different fee structure commensurate with the fees determined by the fee committee of the university. Since Mizoram University is a central university, the course fees are heavily subsidised for the students. The online programmes are self-funded programmes and hence carry a different fee structure, keeping in view the expenditure. In spite of the fact that we are a very highly rated university, our online courses are one of the most affordable ones in the country and very reasonable and almost comparable with offline course fees.

Q. How will the classes be imparted? Will the format be live or recorded?

A. Our online courses follow a hybrid model of learning – the students are provided with self-learning material for self-paced reading, pre-recorded videos to clarify their concepts and the professors also conduct weekly live sessions to teach the concepts to the students. The students are also provided with self-assessment tests at the end of each chapter for practice purposes.

Q. Are you recruiting separate faculty for conducting online programmes?

A. The university pools in its faculty from different departments for conducting the relevant classes for online courses. Moreover, we also invite external visiting faculty members and industry trainers to teach our students from time to time.

Q. What will be the evaluation procedure after the exams?

A. The students have to go through two types of assessments – formative assessments that are conducted during the term and summative assessments that are conducted at the end of the term. Both these types of assessments are conducted using our online assessment platform.

Q. Will the online degree programmes replicate the conventional degree programmes? What is your take?

A. I think that both types of degrees have their own relevance – where the students want a more immersive and intensive learning experience, a classroom model of teaching works the best; whereas if the student wants the flexibility of time and space, the online model works for the student. Moreover, for working students, housewives and for those who cannot travel to the university, the online model of learning is a boon and advantage for them.

Q. There are reservations from many teachers regarding the quality of online degree programmes. What is your opinion?

A. Online learning has come a long way owing to the various innovations in technology, platforms, tools, techniques, pedagogy and content. However, it is true that all courses would not be possible to teach online – but for a vast majority, depending on the skill of the teacher, online learning can provide a near-classroom experience.

Q. What about access to the library and other resources? How have you geared up for that?

A. Our regular students have access to our physical library; the online students have access to our online content repository. We also provide links to open educational resources to our students as appropriate for their programmes from time to time.

Q. Will you be helping these students with placements?

A. Our university is gearing up to provide additional skills training and placement assistance to our students. And the information regarding placement will be communicated to students from time to time.
