Hitachi Energy achieves 100% renewable energy across its operations

Technology company Hitachi Energy has announced a major milestone within the company’s sustainability goals.

Hitachi Energy is now using 100% fossil-fuel-free electricity to power its own operations, a development that moves the company a step closer to its Sustainability 2030 plan.

The company’s Sustainability 2030 Plan is based on four pillars namely Planet, People, Peace and Partnerships and aims to ensure Hitachi Energy achieves carbon-neutrality across its operations by 2030.

Claudio Facchin, the CEO of Hitachi Energy said: “By achieving 100% fossil-free electricity in our own operations, we have reduced our CO2 equivalent emissions by over 50% compared to 2019.

“The Net Zero challenge is global and it’s about acting now, innovating, and collaborating across countries, industries and societies. Together with customers, partners, and all stakeholders, we are advancing the world’s energy system to be more sustainable, flexible and secure.”

The milestone achieved by Hitachi Energy is equivalent to the removal of over 35,000 passenger cars from the road and avoids the emissions of 175 kilotonnes of greenhouse gas per year.

Achieving the milestone is a result of Hitachi Energy pursuing various pathways that would help accelerate the energy transition including the installation of solar systems and integrating them with digital tools to optimise operations and control, according to the company’s statement.

For instance, Hitachi Energy has installed solar panels at its Zhongshan factory in China where the company is producing 20% of its total electricity consumption onsite.

Hitachi Energy is also leveraging green tariffs, Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs), and Power Purchase Agreements across its operations and facilities in 90 countries.

The company says it will increase investments in energy efficiency and renewables such as hydropower and solar to achieve its sustainability goals.
