AMD has officially confirmed the specifications of their Radeon 400 series mobility GPUs on their site. The line consists of several Radeon R9 and Radeon R7 series chips which will be integrated on mobile platforms ranging from high-performance to low-power solutions. The AMD Radeon 400 series mobility lineup also include Polaris based chips which we will detail.

AMD's Radeon 400 Mobile GPUs Officially Confirmed - Radeon R9 Series To Feature Polaris GCN 4.0 Architecture

The AMD Radeon 400 series mobile lineup includes a total of 11 SKUs based on different GPU (Configurations). While some chips are new, the majority are rebrands of the existing Radeon 300 series mobility lineup which means that low-end stuff will be same as last year. Only upper level chips which come in the mainstream and high-performance market will be shipping with the new Polaris architecture which comes with 2.5x increase in efficiency.

The AMD Radeon 400 series based on Polaris GPUs will be part of the GCN 4.0 family. The GCN 4.0 architecture is completely redesigned with a updated main processor, new geometry processors and several other updates inside the core blocks. The latest Polaris architecture also includes an update Primitive Discard Accelerator, Hardware Scheduler, Instruction Pre-Fetch, Improved Shader Efficiency and memory compression technology.

AMD Radeon 400 series mobile GPUs based on Polaris architecture will be incredibly efficient.

The Polaris GPUs are manufactured on the latest 14nm FinFET process node which delivers vast improvements in transistor density and also lead to much lower power consumption with low leakage compared on existing nodes. However, the lineup mentioned below is not using Polaris architecture and instead based on rebranded chips dating back to the HD 8000 series.

AMD Radeon R9 400 Series Mobility GPUs:

The AMD Radeon

R9 M400 Series

lineup includes three chips. The Radeon R9 M485X, Radeon R9 M470X and Radeon R9 M470. All three chips are based on existing GPUs for instance, the Radeon R9 M485X is powered by AMD's Antigua XT GPU. This chip features the same specifications as the Radeon R9 M395X with 8 GB of GDDR5 memory that operates along a 256-bit bus and a 1250 MHz memory clock. The chip will likely be clocked at the same speeds as its predecessor.

The other two chips are based on Bonaire GPUs. The Radeon R9 M470X has 14 compute units which leads to 896 stream processors while the Radeon R9 470 GPU comes with 12 compute units that leads to 768 shaders. Both chips feature 4 GB of GDDR5 memory running across a 128-bit memory interface that is clocked at 1500 MHz.

AMD Radeon R7 400 Series Mobility GPUs:

The AMD Radeon

R7 M400 Series

lineup includes five chips. You won't get to see a Polaris chip in this family. All chips are based on old GPUs. Starting with the Radeon R7 M465X which has a 512 stream processor chip with 4 GB of GDDR5 VRAM clocked at 1125 MHz. The next two are Topaz XT based Radeon R7 M65 and R7 M465 that are using the same core config of 384 stream processors with 4 GB VRAM. The M465 uses GDDR5 while the 460 uses DDR3 memory. There are also cut down variants using only 5 compute units (320 stream processors) which include the Radeon R7 M445 and Radeon R7 M440.

AMD Radeon R5 400 Series Mobility GPUs:

The Radeon R5 400 series lineup consists of three GPUs which will be aimed at low-cost, entry level products. The SKUs include R5 M435, R5 M430 and R5 M420 which are based on Sun XT and Jet Pro GPUs. All GPUs are featuring the same core configuration of 320 stream processors. Memory includes 4 GB of either GDDR5 or DDR3 clocked at 1000 MHz and featured across a 64-bit bus.
